How to Grade Pokemon Cards: PSA, BGS & CGC Guide
Everything you need to know about professional Pokemon card grading. Compares PSA, BGS, and CGC services, explains the grading process, and helps you decide if grading is worth it.
What Is Professional Card Grading?
Professional card grading is the process of submitting a Pokemon card to a third-party grading company that evaluates its condition, assigns a numerical grade, and encases it in a tamper-proof plastic slab. Graded cards are authenticated, protected, and carry a standardized condition rating that is trusted across the collecting community. For high-value Pokemon cards, professional grading can significantly increase resale value and buyer confidence.
Whether you're a collector in Sacramento, Oakland, or anywhere in Northern California, understanding the grading process is essential for making informed decisions about your most valuable cards.
The Big Three Grading Companies
Three companies dominate the Pokemon card grading landscape. Each has its own strengths, pricing, and reputation:
PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)
- Scale: 1-10 (with a special "10 Gem Mint" designation)
- Reputation: The most popular and widely recognized grading company for Pokemon cards. PSA 10s command the highest premiums.
- Turnaround: Standard service takes 4-6 months. Express services are available at higher prices ($75-$300+).
- Cost: Starting at $20-$25 per card for standard service tiers.
- Best for: Maximizing resale value, especially for high-end vintage cards.
BGS (Beckett Grading Services)
- Scale: 1-10 with sub-grades for Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. Also features the coveted "Black Label" 10 (all four sub-grades at 10).
- Reputation: Known for stricter grading standards. A BGS 10 Black Label is considered the pinnacle of grading.
- Turnaround: 3-6 months for standard service.
- Cost: Starting at $20-$30 per card.
- Best for: Collectors who value detailed condition breakdown and stricter standards.
CGC (Certified Guaranty Company)
- Scale: 1-10 with half-point grades and optional sub-grades.
- Reputation: The newest major grading company for Pokemon cards. Growing quickly in popularity with competitive pricing and faster turnaround.
- Turnaround: Often 2-4 months for standard service — typically faster than PSA or BGS.
- Cost: Starting at $15-$20 per card.
- Best for: Budget-conscious grading and faster turnaround times.
Should You Grade Your Pokemon Cards?
Grading isn't always worth it. Here's a general framework for deciding:
- Grade if: The raw card is worth $50+ and appears to be in near-mint or better condition. A PSA 10 can multiply the value of a card by 3-10x.
- Skip grading if: The card has visible wear, is from a common modern set, or is worth less than $30 raw. The grading fee plus shipping may exceed the value increase.
- Consider grading for: Sentimental cards you want to preserve long-term, even if the monetary ROI doesn't justify it.
How to Prepare Cards for Grading
Before submitting, inspect your cards carefully under good lighting. Look for surface scratches, edge whitening, corner dings, and centering issues. Only submit cards that you believe can achieve an 8 or higher. Place cards in clean penny sleeves and semi-rigid card holders (card savers) for shipping. Many collectors in the Bay Area and Sacramento area use group submission services to save on per-card costs.
