Guide to Pokemon Card Conditions: NM, LP, MP, HP
Learn the standard condition grades for Pokemon cards including Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, and Heavily Played. Understand how condition affects value.
Why Card Condition Matters
In the world of Pokemon card collecting, condition is king. The difference between a Near Mint and Lightly Played card can mean a 30-50% swing in value, and the gap between Near Mint and Heavily Played can be 80% or more. Whether you're buying, selling, or simply cataloging your collection, understanding the standard condition grades is essential knowledge. Collectors throughout Northern California — from Sacramento to the Bay Area — use these same universal condition standards when trading and selling cards.
The Standard Condition Grades
The Pokemon card market uses a standardized set of condition abbreviations. Here's what each one means:
NM (Near Mint)
- Description: The card appears nearly perfect to the naked eye. Upon very close inspection, there may be one or two minor imperfections such as a tiny white speck on an edge or the faintest surface mark.
- Value impact: NM is the baseline for most pricing guides. When a price guide lists a card at $100, they typically mean NM condition.
- Grading equivalent: NM cards typically grade between PSA 7-9 depending on specifics.
- What to look for: Crisp corners, minimal edge whitening, clean surface, good centering.
LP (Lightly Played)
- Description: The card shows minor wear that is visible upon casual inspection but doesn't significantly detract from the card's appearance. This may include light edge whitening, small surface scratches, or slightly worn corners.
- Value impact: LP cards typically sell for 70-85% of NM price. A $100 NM card might sell for $70-$85 in LP condition.
- Grading equivalent: LP cards typically grade between PSA 5-7.
- What to look for: Consistent but minor wear across edges, light surface marks visible under direct light.
MP (Moderately Played)
- Description: The card shows clear, obvious wear that is immediately visible. This includes noticeable edge whitening, surface scratches, creases that don't break the surface, clouding on holofoil, and worn corners.
- Value impact: MP cards sell for 40-65% of NM price. That $100 NM card is worth $40-$65 in MP.
- Grading equivalent: MP cards typically grade between PSA 3-5.
- What to look for: Multiple visible imperfections, wear consistent with regular play use.
HP (Heavily Played) / DMG (Damaged)
- Description: The card shows significant wear including heavy creasing, bends, water damage, major surface scratching, heavy edge wear, or writing/stickers. Damaged cards may be missing pieces, have holes, or be otherwise structurally compromised.
- Value impact: HP cards sell for 15-35% of NM price. Damaged cards may only be worth 5-15% of NM value. However, for extremely valuable cards (like a Base Set Charizard), even HP copies retain meaningful value.
- Grading equivalent: HP cards grade PSA 1-3. Damaged cards may receive a "1" or be deemed ungradeable.
How to Accurately Assess Your Cards
When evaluating your own cards, follow these steps:
- Examine under bright, direct lighting. Overhead LED lights are ideal for revealing surface imperfections.
- Check all four corners under magnification if possible.
- Run your fingertip lightly across the surface to feel for scratches or indentations.
- Inspect both front and back — damage on the back affects condition just as much as the front.
- Look at the card from an angle to catch surface scratches and holofoil clouding.
